The municipal council
The municipal council is the supreme decision making body of the town of Kungälv. It consists of 59 members, who are elected by the population. Municipal elections are held every fourth year in conjunction with county council and parliamentary elections. All political goals for the municipality are decided upon in the municipal council. The municipal council also approves the budget and the level of fees to be charged.

The municipal executive board
The municipal executive board corresponds to the government at central level, and implements the decisions of the municipal council. The decisions of the executive board are implemented by the municipality’s various committees.In contrast to central government, all parties are represented on the municipal executive board. The number of politicians from each party, and their position on the executive board, is determined by how many mandates each party gains in the municipal council, which is decided in the municipal elections.
The municipal executive board’s work is to manage and co-ordinate planning but also to follow-up the municipality’s operations and the municipal economy. The municipal executive board also prepares and expresses views on all matters on which the municipal council is to make decisions on.
The executive board drafts or delivers its opinion on all issues before they are resolved by the Council. The board is also responsible for implementing the resolutions. The chairman of the board is the municipal commissioner Bengt Gustafsson (m) and the vice-commissioner is Miguel Odhner (s).

The executive director of the municipality

Magnus Gyllestad is the executive director of the municipality. He is made executive of all administrative managers and administration. He seconds the municipal executive board with planning and control, management and co-ordination. His responsibility is to lead and develop the organisation on the basis of a political vision, which is called The process of Kungälv.
